TRACE FOUNDATION HOSTS: LOSAR 2010-YEAR OF THE IRON TIGER

Photos by Trace Foundation Staff, Aaron Reiss, and Isabel Wagner

Trace Foundation proudly hosted our annual Losar event on Friday, February 26th titled, Losar 2010-Year of the Iron Tiger, which celebrated the new year traditions across the Tibetan plateau. Attendees braved the season’s biggest snowstorm to come out for this year’s festivities, which began with a talk by noted speaker Dr. Lozang Jamspal, instructor of classical Tibetan and Sanskrit at Columbia University. He presented a talk on New Year’s in Ladakh accompanied by a short video. Nyima Dorjee, author and historian on the Kham region, spoke next about new year customs of Drakyap illustrated by a photo slide show. He was followed by Sonam Ongmo, a writer and journalist, who spoke on the new year traditions in Bhutan and showed the audience some traditional costumes. The last talk was on the 600-year-old custom of Tibetan butter sculptures which are traditionally offered on the 15th day of the Tibetan new year. Two talented artists, Thupten Thinley and Dorjee Gombu, commissioned by Trace Foundation to create nine hand-crafted sculptures, narrated their live demonstration of the process and techniques involved in the creation of these butter offerings.

Audience members were invited to ask questions and were eager to learn more from all our noted speakers and artists. The breathtaking sculptures were on display for everyone’s viewing pleasure and are certainly a site to behold! A reception concluded the evening where guests mingled as they enjoyed various traditional Tibetan dishes. We thank our speakers, sculptors, and event participants for making this event one of our finest!

The butter sculptures will continue to be on display at Trace Foundation’s Latse Library during regular visiting hours listed on the website, http://www.latse.org.
