Yushu Vocational School
Yushu (Jyekundo) Prefecture, Qinghai (Tsongon) Province
Grant funds were used to run an introductory workshop on conservation for participants from different areas of Qinghai, and to create a locally-based ethnographic exhibit using Yushu Vocational School's collection. The school coordinated the workshop and provided a site for the exhibit, as well as assisting with selection of participants and providing accommodation for them during the workshop

Tsongon Tibetan Folk Art and Literature Magazine

In collaboration with the local partner, Trace Foundation ran a two-week workshop on folk culture research methodology, jointly selecting participants and designing curriculum. The magazine will publish a summary of the workshop contents in its December 2002 issue

To conduct a six-week Folk Culture Preservation Training Course for students and staff from the Sichuan Provincial Tibetan Institute, consisting of training and practice in ethnographic field methods and analysis, including a fieldwork component. The Sichuan Nationalities Research Institute produced three sets of original research data gathered during the fieldwork stage.

To research and compile a book documenting traditional Tibetan handicrafts, including the use of still photography and video footage. Scholar Kunchog Tenzin spent 18 months traveling in Tibetan regions to research this book and arranged for its publication.

With a capital equipment grant consisting of audio equipment, computer software, supplies, and training, SPTI is creating an audio-digital archive of the institute's collection of lectures and speeches by prominent scholars. SPTI is responsible for the digital transfer process, organizing and maintaining the archive, and maintenance and upkeep of the equipment.

Provided a capital equipment grant consisting of one desktop computer and two digital video cameras to be used by the institute in collecting and processing data related to local folk culture. The Sichuan Provincial Tibetan Institute set up a system for the ongoing management of the equipment, and provided a dedicated office for its storage and use.

Jigmei Gyaltsen School
Maqin (Machen) County, Guoluo (Golog) Prefecture, Qinghai (Tsongon) Province
To build a dormitory and classroom building with a traditional façade and modern interior. The Jigmei Gyaltsen School managed all aspects of construction, including researching traditional stonemasonry techniques and interviewing engineers to design methods of incorporating them into a contemporary building.

To promote the preservation and development of traditional Tibetan art mineral colors and train students in traditional Tibetan painting techniques. Tibet University provided training in painting techniques, facilities for training, storage of equipment, and raw materials to the value of $6,098.

Trace Foundation Grants to Other Organizations Supporting Culture in China
Tibet Heritage Fund
Lhasa, Tibet Autonomous Region
To support the work of Tibet Heritage Fund, which includes: architectural restoration of traditional Tibetan buildings; water sanitation; and information exchange about cultural preservation. Trace Foundation grants have contributed to the work of Tibet Heritage Fund, which has been supported by government offices in China and international donors.
Trace Foundation Grants to Tibet Heritage Fund include:
A grant to restore damaged buildings in Lhasa in the traditional Tibetan architectural style and to install one traditional Tibetan toilet and one solar shower. Matching funds of $24,184 for the restoration of one of the buildings were provided by the Bureau of Culture of the Tibet Autonomous Region.

A grant to cover the expenses relating to surveying of Lhasa historical buildings by faculty members of the Architecture and Planning Department of Shanghai Tongji University. Members of the surveying team provided an assessment report of Tibet Heritage Fund work.

A grant to cover restoration, training expenses, and operations costs over a one-year period. Under the terms of this grant, 24 floor builders, one electrician, one carpenter, one painter, and two masons were employed on restoration projects and trained by a master builder and master mason.

The Nature Conservancy

To support Photovoice, a public participation project which uses cameras and photographs to protect natural and cultural resources in Yunnan Province.
