Northwest Nationalities University
Lanzhou, Gansu Province

Awards for outstanding teachers, in the form of teacher training opportunities and publishing assistance, to ten outstanding Northwest Nationalities University teachers every year over a five-year period. This project was jointly funded by Trace Foundation and Northwest Nationalities University, which contributed matching funds of $6,173.

For a newly established three-year business management training program that will send teachers from Northwest Nationalities University and other institutions to the Science and Technology University of China in Hefei, Anhui Province, and for publication of accompanying business textbooks. Northwest Nationalities University selected participants and paid salaries, bonuses, and health insurance during training.

For a computer science training program to send teachers from Northwest Nationalities University and other institutions to the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei, Anhui Province, and for accompanying textbooks. Northwest Nationalities University selected participants and paid salaries, bonuses, and health insurance during training, and provided a staff member to teach a class on a Tibetan computer application for three months.

Qinghai Law and Political Science College / Central Political Science and Law University Collaboration
Xining (Siling), Qinghai (Tsong'on) Province and Beijing Municipality

For scholarships to send a total of 11 instructors from the Qinghai Law and Political Science College to study for a second Bachelor's degree in law at the Central Political Science and Law University in Beijing Municipality and for translation of textbooks. Local partners selected participants and paid their transportation fees, salaries, bonuses, and health insurance during training.

Xining (Siling), Qinghai (Tsong'on) Province and Beijing Municipality

Support for a 14-lecture series at Qinghai Law and Political Science College by professors from the Central Political Science and Law University in Beijing Municipality. The local partner paid for the lecture forum and publicity.

To compile and publish a Tibetan dictionary of computer terminology.

For a computer laboratory at the Tibetan Department of Northwest Nationalities University. Northwest Nationalities University provided and maintained laboratory space, provided and installed software, trained instructors, maintained equipment, and contributed $515 towards equipment purchase.

For compilation of 20 college level Tibetan Medicine textbooks.

Recent Grants in Rural Education

Tongren Nationalities Middle School
Tongren (Rebkong), Huangnan (Malho) Prefecture, Qinghai (Tsong'on) Province

For the support of two classes at Tongren Nationalities Middle School over a three-year period with emphasis on the study of languages and sciences. The school recruited students, managed classes and teaching staff, and supervised students.

Amount of Support: $166,995

Hulangcheng Village
Minhe (Kamalog) County, Haidong (Tsoshar) Prefecture, Qinghai (Tsong'on) Province

For the renovation of Hulangcheng Primary School and Dongling Primary School. Local partners provided a new playground and contributed $9,685 towards the construction of teachers' quarters at Hulangcheng Primary School. At Dongling Primary School, villagers constructed an enclosing wall, and contributed food for skilled laborers and 425 days of construction work, to the total value of $772.

Ganzi Prefecture Government
Kangding (Dartsedo) County, Ganzi (Kandze) Prefecture, Sichuan Province

For a four-year training program to train 100 teachers as bilingual Chinese/Tibetan science teachers in middle schools. The local partner selected participants in the training, paid salaries and transportation fees, and arranged job assignments following graduation.

Ganzi (Kandze) Prefecture, Sichuan Province

For government-administered higher education scholarships to students in Ganzi Prefecture for the academic years 1999-2000, 2000-2001 and 2001-2002. Ganzi Prefecture Government selected recipients for financial aid and distributed funds.

Luhuo Tibetan Middle School
Luhuo County, Ganzi (Kandze) Prefecture, Sichuan Province

For the provision of vocational arts classes in traditional Tibetan painting, drawing and woodcarving techniques for ninety students for one academic year. The school contributed $1,453 towards instructors' salary costs and wood for woodcarving to the value of $327.

Gyalten Primary School
Ganzi (Kandze) County, Ganzi (Kandze) Prefecture, Sichuan Province

For four students to study Tibetan medicine at the Tibetan Medical College in Lhasa, Tibet Autonomous Region for one year.

Xikang Welfare School
Kangding (Dartsedo) County, Ganzi (Kandze) Prefecture, Sichuan Province

Towards the costs of construction and establishment of a boarding school for 100 orphaned children. The school also raised funds within China to meet additional costs.

Amount of Support: $150,792

Yangjuan Yi Primary School
Yanyuan County, Liangshan Prefecture, Sichuan Province

Towards costs of construction and establishment of a primary school and initiation of extra curricular, community-based educational activities. This grant contributed to the school's initial set-up budget of $60,000.

Naqu Prefecture Vocational Training Schools
Naqu (Nagchu) Prefecture, Tibet Autonomous Region

For a one-year training program for in-service teachers at community-run (min-ban) primary schools. Local partners selected participants, paid their salaries during training, organized training (including administrative and computer skills), and provided classroom facilities and living accommodation.

Biru County Government
Biru (Driru) County, Naqu (Nagchu) District, Tibet Autonomous Region

For the training of 55 teachers at community-run (min-ban) primary schools: 35 in-service teachers during summer and winter vacations and 20 new teachers in a six-month training course. Local partners selected participants, paid in-service teachers' salaries during training, organized training (including administrative skills), provided classroom facilities and living accommodation, and arranged job assignments for new teachers.

Tibet Autonomous Region Tibetan Medical College
Lhasa, Tibet Autonomous Region

For financial aid to 54 impoverished students for one academic year. TAR Tibetan Medical College selected the financial aid recipients based on their economic situation and academic performance. The college set up a committee to select students and manage and distribute grant funds.

Recent Grants in English Language Training

Qinghai Normal University
Xining (Siling), Qinghai (Tsongon) Province

For a three-year English language training program to train students from Qinghai Province at vocational middle school (zhong-zhuan) level and for a two-year training program to train students from Qinghai Province at junior college (da-zhuan) level. Qinghai Normal University is responsible for the administration of the program and provision of dormitories, classrooms, and local teaching staff.

Amount of Support: $172,650 plus recruitment expenses, support for four English teachers and miscellaneous fund

Northwest Nationalities University
Lanzhou, Gansu Province

For a three-year English language training program to train one class of 30 students from Gansu and Sichuan Provinces at vocational middle school (zhong-zhuan) level. Northwest Nationalities University is responsible for the administration of the program and provision of dormitories, classrooms and local teaching staff.

Amount of Support: $64,285 plus recruitment expenses, support for two English teachers and miscellaneous funds

Kangding Teachers College
Kangding (Dartsedo) County, Ganzi (Kandze) Prefecture, Sichuan Province

For English-language teaching to students in the English and Tibetan departments of Kangding Teachers College. Kangding Teachers College provides accommodations, local transportation and personal computers for the teachers.

Amount of Support: $46,000

Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO)
Beijing Municipality

To cover the contributions (for salaries and travel allowances) usually paid by local schools for the placement of seven foreign English teachers at Prefecture Nationalities Normal Schools in Qinghai (Tsongon) and Gansu Provinces. VSO covers all other placement costs, a total of $123,375 for seven teachers.

TAR Medical Quality Control Bureau
Lhasa Municipality, Tibet Autonomous Region

To conduct an 8 day Good Medicine Practices (GMP) course in collaboration with the State Drug Administration, Beijing Municipality for 43 members of Tibetan medicine enterprises, colleges and county hospitals with added modules on Community Service and Corporate Social Responsibility. Certificate issued upon successful completion of the course.

Nationalities Department of Qinghai Normal University
Xining (Siling), Qinghai (Tsongon) Province

To conduct a six-month business training course for minority mid-level managers from Western China. Qinghai Normal University selected 25-30 students from a pool of mid-level managers from private and public enterprises in Qinghai Province; administered a selection examination; conducted the training; and issued a graduation certificate.

Nationalities Department of Qinghai Normal University
Xining (Siling), Qinghai (Tsongon) Province

To conduct a two-week business training workshop for minority entrepreneurs from Western China. Qinghai Normal University selected the 25-30 participants; provided accommodation for the duration of the workshop; conducted the training; and issued a certificate to those who successfully completed the workshop.

Trace Foundation Grants to Other Organizations Supporting Education in the People's Republic of China.

Swedish Tibetan Society for Schools and Culture
Stockholm, Sweden

For renovation of Ritog Primary School and Mampa Township Center School in Meldrogungkar County, Tibet Autonomous Region. This Trace Foundation grant contributed to the Swedish Tibetan Society for Schools and Culture's ongoing work, the aim of which is to build, renovate or otherwise help over 100 schools in Tibet.

NYEMA Projects, Inc.
New York, USA

For operational costs of Yonden Gatsal Ling Elementary School and 40 village satellite schools, and for the Senior Mentors Program at Yonden Gatsal Ling, in Nangchen County, Yushu Prefecture, Qinghai Province. This Trace Foundation grant contributed to NYEMA's ongoing education projects in Nangchen County.

Handicap International.
Beijing Municipality

For the development of Tibetan sign language and relevant support structures, including awareness raising and local staff training in Lhasa, Tibet Autonomous Region.
