Program in Education
Trace Foundation is committed to education as a long-term strategy for catalyzing economic and social development and, therefore, a significant means of addressing the foundation's mission. The foundation's education program takes the twin strategies of broadening access to educational opportunities and improving the quality of education. Training and professional development play a large part in our education projects and also in our work in other sectors. Whenever appropriate, we include a capacity-building component in our projects.

Throughout all aspects of our work in the education field, Trace Foundation relies on local partners to participate in needs assessment, project design, and implementation. We support initiatives that foster high-quality education and that seek to motivate students and actively involve parents, teachers, school administrators and the leadership of local education officials.

Schools in rural Tibetan areas face particular geographic and social challenges in providing quality education to populations dispersed over a wide area. Economic resources are often scarce, despite the rapid growth of the regional economy in recent years. Farming and herding families may rely on their children at home, especially during certain seasonal activities. Nomadic families who may wish to retain their traditional pastoral lifestyle with its seasonal migrations, deal with additional difficulties in sending their children to school. In urban areas, institutions of higher education prepare students for careers as teachers or government employees, for further studies, or for the new employment opportunities that are arising as trade and economic activity increase.

Working in close cooperation with local government offices and institutions to meet the needs of their communities, Trace Foundation develops educational projects at all levels, from primary school to postgraduate study and professional training. We seek to support and to help realize the commitment of the central government of the People's Republic of China, and of local governments in the regions where we work, to provide at least nine years of schooling for all school-age children. The foundation also works closely with institutions of higher education as they implement reforms aimed at raising the quality of education and expanding curricula. Also in the field of education, we support training in the fields of English and Business and scholarships for study both in China and oversees.

Trace Foundation's Projects in Education

Trace Foundation supports Higher Education Institutional Development initiatives that seek to raise the quality of education and enhance course content.

In a group of projects working within Rural Education, the foundation takes a range of approaches towards strengthening schools in rural areas and generating opportunities for rural students.

Trace Foundation's English Teacher Training Project trains teachers to provide high-quality English language teaching, thereby broadening students study and employment opportunities.

To help young people and entrepreneurs to develop their ideas and participate in modern business networks, the foundation funds Business Education training. Classes introduce best practices in business and include socially responsible approaches, such as environmental protection and philanthropy.

The goal of broadening access to education while supporting excellence is served by programs offering international and domestic Scholarships, some open to individuals and others administered by local institutions.
