Primary and Middle School Projects
Strong primary school education is of vital importance. It is at this level that students lay the foundation for their economic and educational futures, and develop formative impressions of their culture and communities. Similarly, middle school education lays the groundwork for higher education and employment opportunities. Several significant challenges to strong primary education exist however, including insufficient or irrelevant teacher and administrator training, a lack of applicable models for mother-tongue instruction, and the scarcity of auxiliary teaching and learning materials in Tibetan. Working in cooperation with local education bureaus and educational institutions, Trace Foundation seeks to improve the quality of Tibetan primary and middle schools and to ensure their relevance to the local situation.
Trace Foundation projects focus on:
- Teacher training aimed at improving teaching methodology, understanding of new curricula, and subject-area knowledge;
- Expanding school administration capacity by principal and administrator training designed to address the specific needs of the Tibetan communities;
- Improving language instruction through English teacher training initiatives and teaching Chinese as a second language;
- Developing teaching and learning resources;
- Encouraging research on mother tongue education;
- Increasing access to education through student sponsorship and school construction in remote areas;
- Updating school facilities.
