project goals & context

Trace Foundation is committed to improving the quality of education within Tibetan areas in China. Tibetan-speaking teachers, however, are primarily trained for Tibetan language and literature subjects. Recognizing the limits this places on the further development of mother-tongue education in other subjects, Trace started in 2007 the Qinghai Science Teacher Training Program (QSTTP), a three-year initiative designed to improve the quality of Tibetan-medium education in the five subject areas of math, physics, chemistry, biology, and geography.

project description

science mtg

Focusing on the needs of local communities in Tsolho, Malho, and Tsoshar Prefectures, Trace Foundation’s QSTTP aims to produce a replicable model of high-quality instruction, with documented results in the traditionally poorly performing area of natural science education. The project was further designed to collaborate with the ongoing Tsolho Junior Middle School Project (JMSP) to conserve resources and develop synergy. In partnership with 20 project schools and county- and prefecture-level education bureaus, the project will focus on raising the quality of instruction through:
