project summary tibetan Medium Higher Education Institutional Development Initiative

project goals & context

sharing educational techniques

Trace Foundation’s Tibetan Medium Higher Education Institutional Development Initiative (TMHEIDI) was designed to expand Tibetan-medium majors and course offerings in fields key to the development of Tibetan regions. Prior to Trace's intervention, the majority of Tibetan-proficient faculty had been trained only in Tibetan language and literature fields, significantly constraining universities' attempts to expand Tibetan-medium offerings beyond these areas. Trace Foundation provides both financial and logistical aid to higher education institutions to foster the expansion of Tibetan-medium offerings in subjects integral to economic and social development of Tibetan areas.

project description

Through the TMHEIDI project, Trace Foundation partnered with pioneering universities in Qinghai, Sichuan, and Gansu provinces to expand Tibetan-medium higher education in business management, computer science, law, and Tibetan medicine. Project partners were committed to expanding offerings in these fields but were hindered by a lack of sufficiently qualified faculty in both the subject matter and Tibetan language, as well as a lack of resources to provide necessary faculty training. Textbooks in Tibetan were also limited, especially for these new majors. Trace Foundation’s TMHEIDI project supported the establishment and enhancement of these majors and courses in the Tibetan medium through instructor training, textbook publication and distribution, and promoting teaching excellence. The project focused on institutional development and strengthening programs of study in:
