Graduate Scholarships

Postgraduate scholarships target individuals who pursue Masters and Doctoral degree studies and who have participated in and will contribute to after finishing studies, the development of Tibetan medium educational system. Currently the foundation offers two types of scholarships for postgraduate study. Postgraduate Bridging Scholarships (PGBS) are available to recent graduates from undergraduate degree programs to help students prepare for postgraduate entrance exams. Postgraduate Direct Scholarships (PGDS) are designed to support individuals pursuing postgraduate degrees, and offer support for up to three years of support.

In addition, the English Training Bridging Scholarship (ETBS) is also available for potential PhD students who need assistance with their English language skills.

Graduate Scholarships

English Training Bridging Scholarship (ETBS)

The English Training Bridging Scholarship (ETBS) is a new feature launched in 2010. It is meant to provide a maximum one-year scholarship for individuals who have recently taken, but failed to pass, their PhD entrance examinations due to problems with English proficiency. This is a domestic scholarship with about 10 quotas per year and the amount of support is maximum 10,000 RMB. Five individuals have been awarded this scholarship in 2010.

Candidate Qualifications:

  • Had at least one time experience of taking PH.D exam recently.
  • Fluent in spoken and written Tibetan
  • Have a mature PhD academic plan, including a determined doctoral examination schedule, convincing choice of fields of study, detailed and clear academic design and objectives
  • Applicants must have the in-service training permission from their employers. 
  • Have a convincing English training plan.

Postgraduate Direct Scholarships (PGDS)

Postgraduate Direct Scholarship targets individuals doing postgraduate studies in domestic higher education institutions (including both Master’s and doctoral degree studies). In 2007 we awarded 20 individuals under this scholarship. In 2008 the quota is increased to 25. In 2009 the number reached 30. In 2010 and 2011 the number has increased to 41 each year. This scholarship provides a maximum of three year support.

Since 2009 the award amount for PGDS is divided into three brackets: first place, second place and third place award.  First place award is maximum 8,000 RMB per year, second place award 7,000 RMB per year, and third place 5,000 per year.

Candidates for the postgraduate direct Scholarship is reviewed and selected directly by Trace Foundation’s Scholarship Review Committee and managed by the Higher Education Scholarship Project.

Candidate qualifications

  • Applicants should plan to or have already taken the graduate entrance exams and be able to provide, by the time of scholarship review, information about their scores, admission status, including information where their overall score is ranked in the admissions list for their chosen program.
  • Candidates must be fluent in both written and spoken Tibetan
  • Those proposing fields of study related to Tibetan medium education will receive preferential consideration
  • Have clearly defined academic goals and future career plans; willing to fulfill post-scholarship service obligations as required by Trace Foundation.

Postgraduate Direct International Scholarships (PGDIS)

The Postgraduate Direct International Scholarships target qualified individuals who are Bachelor’s or Master’s degree holders hoping to further their studies at the Masters or PhD level.  Candidates do not need to have professional experience in order to apply. This scholarship is a new feature launched in 2011, and we have 7 grantees for this scholarship in 2011.

Candidate Qualification:

  • Holds a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree
  • Academically outstanding
  • Must have sufficient foreign language proficiency and provide relevant test scores such as TOEFL and IELTS.
  • Fluency in spoken and written Tibetan
  • Proposing fields of study under-developed in Tibetan higher education system and are in high demand in Tibetan regions
  • Have convincing, clearly defined academic goals and future career plans.
