A Photographer in Tibet

A Photographer in Tibet
Thursday, May 31, 2012

Photographer Laurent Zylberman and writer Eric Meyer were the first independent journalists to travel to the Tibet Autonomous Region in the fall of 2008. Over the course of their fifteen-day trip through Lhasa, Gyantse, and Shikatse, Zylberman captured powerful images of a society in transition. Encompassing Tibetan urbanites, rural farmers, clergy, and officials from governments, schools, universities, and hospitals, as well as a variety of Han new-comers, including job seekers, taxi drivers, hotel workers and shopkeepers, Zylberman’s work offers a uniquely comprehensive look at Tibet at a critical moment.

Photojournalist,

Laurent Zylberman’s first assignments were photographing the music scene in London in the early 1980s. After an attempt to hitch-hike to New York City, via Greenland, where he was stopped, Zylberman eventually moved to Mexico, China, and India, where he covered industrial and social development for the Sygma Photo Agency (now Corbis) and Asiaweek. In 1997 he returned to Europe and is now based in Paris. In 1981, Zylberman founded Graphix-Images, a photo agency specializing in corporate communications. He runs the daily photoblog 365 Degrees. In New York, Laurent is represented by Sous les Etoiles Gallery.
