Translator (New)

Trace Foundation is a non-profit organization headquartered in New York City.  The Foundation funds and implements initiatives related to social, cultural, economic and environmental development in Tibetan communities in the Southwest and Northwest regions of China including Qinghai Province, Sichuan Province and the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR).  The Foundation is dedicated to finding sustainable ways to meet the challenges of these unique communities while respecting traditional ways of life.

POSITION POST:     Chengdu, Sichuan Province
                             Xining, Qinghai Province

REPORTS TO:         Operations Department

The Translator will be responsible for working with staff on various tasks, including but not limited to:

  • Translating documents and correspondence from Tibetan/Chinese to English and English to Tibetan/Chinese;
  • Working in collaboration with the technical staff to revise materials in Tibetan/Chinese/English;
  • Proofreading and editing documents and publications;
  • Conducting necessary research in reference books or on-line to understand the materials being translated and ensure accuracy of details;
  • Assisting in setting timelines and setting priorities for various translation jobs;
  • Providing translations of incidental materials to project staff and other staff and consultants, as needed

 

In order to be successful in this position, the Translator must have:

  • A minimum Dazhuan degree with major in English;
  • Spoken and written proficiency in English, Chinese and/or Tibetan;
  • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Word and Excel);
  • Ability to handle multiple projects, setting priorities and meeting deadlines;
  • Strong work ethic and self-discipline;
  • Interest in and appreciation of traditional Tibetan culture;
  • Flexibility, political and cultural sensitivity.

 

In addition to the above, he/she must:

  • Interact effectively in a team setting
  • Work well in a multi-cultural, multi-lingual environment

RESEARCH INTERN


Trace Foundation is a non-profit organization headquartered in New York City. The Foundation funds and implements initiatives related to social, cultural, education, health, economic, and environmental development in Tibetan communities in the Southwest and Northwest regions of China including Qinghai Province, Sichuan Province, Gansu Province, and the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR).  The Foundation is dedicated to finding sustainable ways to meet the challenges of these unique communities while respecting traditional ways of life.
Trace Foundation seeks a research intern to assist in research and translation of development-related materials.

Duration of the contract:     6 months
Start Date:                        Immediate
Position Location:               New York City

The internship offers an opportunity to both learn about the Foundation’s current projects as well as gain a deeper understanding of the local and translocal development contexts in which the Foundation operates. The intern will be working with  relevant project staff to assist in fulfilling research requests related to Foundation projects as well as updating a trilingual development research database. Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting project staff in researching and preparing reports on education, health, culture, and urban and rural development;
  • Translating written materials between Chinese, English, and Tibetan;
  • Cataloging research materials in a database;
  • Participating in foundation-wide activities.

In order to accomplish these goals, the research intern must have:

  • A commitment to and understanding of Tibetan culture;
  • A university degree in a relevant field;
  • Proficiency in English and at least one of the following languages: Tibetan, Chinese;
  • Excellent computer skills;
  • Excellent writing skills;
  • Good research skills;
  • Good communication and reporting skills;
  • Ability to interact effectively in a team setting.

Internship Program

The aim of Trace Foundation’s internship program is to support young, promising individuals in obtaining practical experience in development work.

This is an excellent opportunity for outstanding individuals interested in pursuing careers in the field of development who also have a commitment to Tibetan culture.  Through our program, we hope to provide young professionals with the knowledge, resources and practical experience necessary to further develop their skills.

Through this program, we also hope to cultivate a pool of future candidates who are interested in the mission of the foundation.

Projects supported by the foundation reflect our guiding principles, and currently fall within four program areas:  culture, education, health care and rural development.  We encourage those interested to visit our website to familiarize themselves with our work and to identify areas of particular interest.

Intern vacancies are posted as they become available.  If no vacancies are listed, you may submit your application for future positions.  We invite you to continue to check the website for openings.

 

General Information

Internships vary in length dependent upon the actual assignment. 

Applicants must have an under-graduate level of Junior or higher to be considered.

All international internships will be on a non-salaried basis.  Trace Foundation will provide travel to/from the post, appropriate accommodations and a modest per diem for international assignments.

The foundation will provide information and assistance on applying for your travel visa.

Medical insurance must be in place prior to travel to the field.  If the intern does not have insurance, Trace will attempt to provide insurance through International Medical Group with the premium being billed to the intern.  For additional information on available insurance, please visit http://www.imglobal.com.  Trace provides evacuation insurance for expatriate interns.

At the end of the assignment, the intern will receive a certificate of appreciation.
